Chris Quinn 1949 - 2008

Chris "The Mighty" Quinn passed away this past Saturday evening following a long illness.

Chris was an encyclopedia of music knowledge - and could run down facts and figures about any song in the top 40 from the fifties through the seventies.

With exception to a short stint in Los Angeles at KHTZ, he spent his entire radio career in and around the Cleveland market, including legendary stations WIXY, WAKR, WBBG, WGAR, WRMR, and WMJI.

He was a consummate radio personality. He loved music and radio was his life. Chris was also a skilled chief engineer.

Calling hours are on Thursday, October 2 from 5 to 7 PM at the Burr Funeral Home, 116 South Street in Chardon, Ohio.

Condolences to his family, his friends, and his many listeners.

Our radio community In Cleveland has suffered many losses recently and this is certainly one of the saddest.

Chris Quinn was one of the nicest guys and greatest radio broadcasters around. I first met him when we were in high school together, and I was so tickled to find out years later that we had both been independently bitten by the radio bug.

Chris was one of the most respected DJ's, music directors and engineers in the industry. He worked for some of the finest radio stations in the Cleveland-Akron market. He held top positions in AFTRA as well as positions in the Fraternal Order Of Police, his "other career", as well as being a crash investigator for the FAA.

I never heard him say an unkind word about anyone (and in this business, that takes effort!) and he had an absolutely indestructible positive attitude. One time when we were recently unemployed from some station or other, he told me, "They can't take away your name." And he built his name into a legend.

That's the kind of attitude he had, even in illness. I hoped so hard he would recover and get back into the fray...he had so much to give and contribute. But we have his legacy, professional and personal, a major contribution the the true art of our profession.

God Bless you, Chris. May the Lord hold you in the palm of His hand.

Hi John I am a long time friend of Chris Quinn. I want to thank you for what you said about him.

You may not know that Chris was thrilled when you hired him at WMJI, gave him a shift and made him one of the team. He was even more thrilled when you appointed him Norm Nite's successor on Sat. and Sun. nights. You asked him before he asked you.

Chris was a good man with an unfortunate addiction to food. It was a lifelong and painful battle. The last few years were a burden for Chris. As you say he is in a better place now.

Tonight, I happened to pop on the WIXY site and thought there was some mistake. Then, searching Chris's name, I found my way here and saw the comments. Chris gave me quite a few 5 minutes of fame(s) on his WMJI shows. At a Ghoulardi Fest, he candidly described his part growing up like me in awe of Ghoulardi. I then remembered seeing him live on TV in the early 1960s on channel 8 presenting a 'Ghoulardi' hat that Chris custom made especially for The King. I also recalled being 'found' via his GREATEST invention: The Knif Finder! Like our 'king', Chris had a unique voice that was smooth and pleasing to behold on the other side of the radio. Perhaps his greatest achievement was discovering and giving airplay to the then unknown band Steam and their hit 'Na-na-hey-hey' (ALMOST as famous as Rock & Roll PT 2 - played at sporting events). Thank you John*ski for allowing me & other fans to share our thoughts of our fallen ether heros. Chris was truly, THEE 'MIGHTY' QUINN and his might will be missed. :-( >

I worked with Chris at a brand new 500 watt daytime station in Warren, Ohio in the early 70's. Even though Chris had light years more experience than most of us, he treated us as equals. I learned so much from him and enjoyed listening to his great delivery. He provided me with the ultimate thrill when he let me visit the WIXY studio while he was working there. The radio world has suffered a great loss, but Chris will live in our hearts always.
